The Dialogue is part of the implementation of the ASEAN Municipal Solid Waste Management Enhancement (AMUSE) Project, which was launched on 30 March 2023, and is being implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), aiming to optimise waste disposal and recycling in small and medium-sized tourist cities in the ASEAN region.

The Dialogue aims to exchange lesson learned and best practices among the ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (AWGESC) and ASEAN Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism Development Committee (ASITDC) and relevant stakeholders, including private sectors on issues around municipal solid waste management in tourism sector as well as identify potential key areas of cooperation between two working groups potentially through joint coordination mechanism, knowledge platform for sustainable waste management and tourism, or any other form.
